The Head and Neck Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Head and Neck Surgical Associates (HNSA), recently concluded another successful year of advancing dental education in the Pacific Northwest.
On Thursday, February 12, 2026, the foundation hosted the 24th Annual Portland Surgical Orthodontic Lecture at Morton’s The Steakhouse in downtown Portland. This invitation-only event brought together the region’s leading orthodontists and surgeons for an evening of collaboration, dining, and advanced learning focused on the management of dentofacial deformities.
Featured Speaker: Dr. Ryan J. McCoy
The highlight of the evening was a presentation by Dr. Ryan J. McCoy, a registered specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from Edmonton, Alberta. Dr. McCoy, a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, delivered a compelling lecture titled “Current Trends and New Perspectives in Orthognathic Surgery.”
Dr. McCoy’s presentation drew upon his extensive training, including his accredited fellowship in Orthognathic and Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Toronto. Attendees gained valuable insights into the latest concepts in reconstructive surgery, exploring how surgical and orthodontic teams can better collaborate to improve patient outcomes.
A Night of Collaboration and Education
Hosted by HNSA surgeons Dr. Allen Cheng, Dr. Ashish Patel, Dr. Baber Khatib, and Dr. Lance Thompson, the event served as a critical forum for continuing education.
Key takeaways from the evening included:
- Advanced Curriculum: The lecture reviewed novel approaches to treating patients with severe dentofacial deformities.
- Professional Development: Attendees received 2 hours of Continuing Dental Education (CDE) credit.
- Community Building: The event fostered essential dialogue between surgeons and orthodontists, with the shared goal of providing patients access to affordable, world-class surgical care.
